Singaporean tourist dies days after Taichung bus accident

Taichung, Sept. 18 (CNA) A Singaporean woman died of her injuries Friday after being struck by a bus while crossing a road in Taichung on Wednesday, the hospital where she was being treated said.

In a written statement, China Medical University Hospital said its medical team had made every effort to save the 67-year-old woman and had provided intensive care.

However, the patient died Friday morning due to the severity of her injuries, the hospital said, expressing deep regret.

According to the Taichung City Police Department's First Precinct, the woman was hit by a Kuo-Kuang Motor Transport bus driven by a 45-year-old man surnamed Gong (龔) at the intersection of Ziyou Road and Minsheng Road in the city's West District at around 11:11 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said the bus struck the woman in a crosswalk while making a right turn onto Ziyou Road. The woman became trapped under the bus' front right tire and was freed by police and paramedics.

She suffered a pelvic fracture and open fractures to her right upper arm and left lower limb and went into out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), police said.

Her vital signs were subsequently restored as she was taken to China Medical University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on Friday.

Police said the woman was visiting Taiwan with eight family members when the accident occurred as she crossed the road. The bus driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident, police added.

On Friday police said they will ask prosecutors to conduct an autopsy and investigate the case as a possible negligent homicide.
