1957: President Dwight D. Eisenhower sends U.S. Army troops to Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas to enforce a federal court order to integrate the school.

1969: Chinese Communists conduct the first underground nuclear test-explosion.

1972: Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos promulgates martial law to arrest opposition Liberal Party Secretary General Aquino Benigno.

1973: Juan Domingo Peron, after going into exile abroad for 17 years, is re-elected president of Argentina. He last served as president of Argentina from 1946 to 1955.

1993: Sydney is chosen by the International Olympic Committee to sponsor the 2000 Olympic Games.

1993: The Republic of China and Belgium sign three investment cooperation agreements to strengthen economic and technological relations.

2000: Singaporean Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew arrives in Taipei for a four-day private visit.

2001: Eurogate 2001, an agricultural products exhibition jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, begins at the World Trade Center in Taipei with products from seven countries on display.

2003: U.S. President George W. Bush urges the international community to help Iraq and Afghanistan build liberal nations in his speech to the 58th United Nations General Assembly.

2004: Over 3,000 people die in Haiti after Hurricane Jeanne produces massive flooding and mudslides.

2005: Taiwan is ranked fifth in global competitiveness, the highest in Asia, by the 2005 World Economic Forum.

2006: Taiwanese pitcher Chien-Ming Wang wins his 18th game during a Major League Baseball season to tie the record set by South Korean Chan Ho Park of the San Diego Padres after leading the New York Yankees to a 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

2007: Led by Buddhist monks, about 20,000 Burmese pro-democracy protesters take to the streets in Yangon in the largest demonstration in nearly two decades against the military junta.

2008: A student at Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences in Kauhajoki, southwestern Finland, shoots 10 people on campus before shooting himself in the head. The sophomore gunman died hours later.

2014: Taiwanese weightlifter Lin Tzu-chi breaks the world record with a lift of 261 kg to win a gold medal in the women's 63-kg event at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

2015: Chinese leader arrives in U.S. for potentially tense visit.

2019: 66 countries vow to achieve net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050 at U.N. Climate Action Summit in New York.

2022: Anti-government protests erupt in dozens of cities across Iran in response to the death of Mahsa Amini while in the custody of the country's morality police. The 22-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly improperly wearing her hijab, the headscarf women are required to wear under Iran's highly conservative Islamic Republic. She died after allegedly suffering multiple blows to the head.

2025: A barrier lake on the Mataian River in Hualien County, eastern Taiwan, overflows, causing a massive surge of water mixed with mud and rocks to destroy the Mataian River Bridge and spill over the riverbank into Guangfu Township, leaving 19 people dead.
