Taipei, Feb. 11 (CNA) Tainan reported this year's eighth case of imported dengue fever on Monday after it was confirmed by health authorities a week ago on Lunar New Year's Eve.

Tainan Public Health Bureau Director Chen Yi (陳怡) said the case involved a 37-year-old man who works in Vietnam but returned to Taiwan for the holiday.

According to Chen, the man developed a fever and felt fatigued on Feb. 1 before returning to Taiwan the following day.

After returning to Taiwan on Feb. 2, he took a quick blood test for dengue fever at the airport but the result was negative and he was allowed to go home. He later sought treatment for his symptoms at a Tainan clinic.

Despite the negative result, the man's case was still reported to the local dengue fever prevention center.

On Feb. 4, the local center was informed by the Taipei-based Centers for Disease Control that the Tainan resident was confirmed to be infected with dengue fever, and local health personnel were dispatched to disinfect the house and neighborhood where the man lives the next day, according to Chen.

The Tainan official urged people who develop a fever within 14 days after arriving in Taiwan from Southeast Asian or South Asian countries to get tested and see a doctor as quickly as possible to help prevent the spread of dengue fever in Taiwan.
