Taipei, Feb. 25 (CNA) The cold and wet weather in northern and northeastern Taiwan, caused by a strong continental cold air mass, is expected to last until Feb. 27, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) forecast Thursday.

Areas around Taiwan were still under the influence of the cold air mass Thursday morning, with the northeastern county of Yilan and areas north of central Taiwan recording lows of 12 degrees Celsius, and eastern Taiwan's Hualien and Taitung seeing lows of 14 degrees, CWB data show.

The affects of the cold air mass were forecast to weaken later in the day, with northern and northeastern Taiwan set to see highs of 16-18 degrees, while the eastern, central and southern parts of the country will record highs of 19-24 degrees, the bureau said.

The CWB predicted that the weather in the north and northeast will become more stable on Saturday, but the strengthening of northeasterly winds over the following two days means that the mercury on those days will remain at a relatively low level in the early morning and nighttime in these areas.
