Taipei, July 5 (CNA) A swimming relay on Saturday will open a month-long summer ocean festival in Taiwan's outlying Kinmen County.

Contestants from China, Taiwan, Macau and Hong Kong will start off from Xiamen in the Chinese southeastern province of Fujian and swim all the way to Lieyu, the second largest island in the county, over a distance of seven kilometers.

This year's race has drawn 196 swimmers.

The relay will be the first in a series of beach activities that will run through Aug. 4.

On the opening night Saturday, bands from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan will compete in performing songs by late Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng, who was remembered for entertaining Republic of China military officers posted in Kinmen when it was a former frontline of Taiwan's defenses against a Chinese Communist invasion.

The competition will climax with a performance by Amber An, a Taiwanese model, singer and actress who rose to popularity in recent years.

The 2013 Summer Ocean Festival also features large-size sand sculptures, beach volleyball and activities aimed at preserving steamer clams, which have decreased in numbers on the southern coast of Kinmen in recent years.
