Taipei, Oct. 15 (CNA) In response to a growing military threat from China, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) is to conduct two days of war games in eastern Taiwan from Tuesday, according to a government notice issued Monday.

Codenamed Joint-Electronic 107-2, the exercises to be held Tuesday and Wednesday will simulate attacks involving China's People's Liberation Army against military bases on Taiwan's eastern coast, according to sources.

In conjunction with forces from the Army and Navy, the Air Force will scramble F-16 jet fighters from the Chiashan (佳山) Airbase in Hualien County to intercept imaginary enemy jets from China.

The drills mean that units tasked with electronic warfare on military bases on Taiwan's east coast will be subject to testing for the first time, the sources said.

The drills are aimed at examining the Taiwan military's ability to withstand a coordinated air and electronic attack, while seeking to strengthen the combat readiness of the armed forces, they said.

Meanwhile on Monday, a one-hour drill involving Chengkung-, Kidd- and Lafayette-class naval vessels was staged to sharpen the country's naval combat capability.
