Taipei, Oct. 7 (CNA) President Mario Abdo Benitez of Paraguay, Taiwan's only diplomatic ally in South America, arrived in Taiwan on Sunday on a state visit and will attend National Day celebrations on Wednesday.

President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) is scheduled to welcome Abdo and his wife Silvana Lopez Moreira de Abdo with full military honors Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Sunday night.

Tsai and Abdo will then hold a meeting and sign a joint statement, to be followed by a state banquet hosted by Tsai for the delegation that includes three Cabinet ministers in charge of foreign affairs, education, and information and communications, according to the ministry.

Tsai will confer the Order of Brilliant Jade with Grand Cordon on Abdo as an expression of gratitude for his contributions to deepening relations between Taiwan and Paraguay, the ministry said.

During Abdo's six-day stay, he will receive an honorary doctorate degree from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, host an investment fair to welcome local investors to explore business opportunities in Paraguay, and engage in cultural activities, including a tour of the National Palace Museum, it said.

Tsai attended the inauguration of Abdo in August and invited Abdo to visit Taiwan for National Day celebrations on Oct. 10.

Taiwan and Paraguay have maintained diplomatic ties since 1957.
