Taipei, Sept. 20 (CNA) New Investigation Bureau Director General Leu Weng-jong (呂文忠) took office Thursday, saying that the bureau's most important task at the moment is to investigate the allegations of irregularities related to the upcoming local government elections.

Leu said he will ask his staff to put every effort into investigating allegations of election law violations such as bribery and overseas interference.

Taiwan will hold its nine-in-one elections on Nov. 24 to elect local government heads and councilmen, as well as lower-level public officials, in 22 cities and counties across the nation.

In addition to dealing with issues related to the election, Leu said, the Investigation Bureau will focus on investigating fake news that could jeopardize national security and social order. The primary mission of the bureau is to protect national security and investigate major crimes, he said.

"I'll do my best to fulfill that mission, although it might be difficult," said Leu, who previously served as director-general of the Administrative Enforcement Agency of the Ministry of Justice (MOJ).

An alumnus of National Chiao-Tung University's Institute of Technology Law, Leu has also served as director of the MOJ's Department of Legal System and acting director-general of the Institute of Forensic Medicine.
