Taipei, July 11 (CNA) Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) will visit El Salvador and Belize July 12-17 to enhance exchanges between Taiwan and its two Central American allies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Wednesday.

Wu will make the trip at the invitation of El Salvador Acting Foreign Minister Carlos Castaneda and Belize Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington, MOFA said in a statement.

During his stay in El Salvador July 12-15, Wu is scheduled to meet President Salvador Sánchez Cerén, Vice President Oscar Ortiz and other senior government officials and congressmen to enhance cooperation and exchange views on possible future projects, the statement noted.

He will also meet with Marco Vinicio Cerezo Arevalo, secretary-general of the Central America Integration System (SICA), a regional organization aimed at promoting sustainable development in Central America through political, economic, social, cultural and ecological integration. Taiwan has been an observer in SICA since 2002.

During his meeting with Sánchez, Wu will give him a letter signed by President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) to congratulate El Salvador on the Oct. 14 canonization of Archbishop of San Salvador Oscar Romero in Rome.

The minister will then make a July 16-17 visit to Belize, where he will meet with Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow, Senate President Lee Mark Chang (鄭經緯) and other politicians.

He will be awarded the Order of Distinction by Elrington in recognition of his contributions to Taiwan-Belize ties, the statement added.
