Taipei, June 17 (CNA) Taiwan showed its support for women's rights in El Salvador Friday by donating a bus to the authorities in Lourdes, a city located 12 km from the capital city of San Salvador.
The bus will provide transport for pregnant and physically impaired women from rural areas to Lourdes, where a "Ciudad Mujer" center, or "Women's City," is located.
The facility is a government project aimed at providing one-stop access for women in employment training, medical and child care services.
Republic of China Ambassador to El Salvador Jaime Chen co-hosted the donation ceremony with Vanda Pignato, secretary of social inclusion and first lady of El Salvador, who is in charge of the project.
Chen presented the bus keys at the ceremony, in addition to sewing machines and computer facilities that have also been donated by Taiwan to the Central American country.
Also attending the ceremony were Margarita Cruz, director of the Women's City in Lourdes, as well as officials from El Salvador's Ministry of Social Inclusion and some 40 women who have suffered abuse or violence.
The project is part of the Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes' efforts to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women in his country.
