Agricultural losses from Typhoon Soudelor top NT$3 billion

Taipei, Aug. 12 (CNA) Taiwan's agricultural losses from Typhoon Soudelor rose Wednesday to an estimated NT$3.03 billion (US$94.8 million), according to the Council of Agriculture (COA).

Citing figures valid as of 6 p.m. Wednesday, the COA said Chiayi County in central Taiwan suffered the biggest agricultural losses, estimated at NT$680.56 million, followed by Yunlin County with losses of NT$319.9 million, Kaohsiung City NT$312.6 million, Tainan City NT$310.94 million, Changhua County NT$296.06 million, Pingtung County NT$241.08 million, and Yilan County NT$216.67 million.

Losses in agricultural produce were estimated at NT$2.34 billion, with 42,261 hectares of crops affected.

Bananas were the hardest hit crop, suffering losses of NT$460.15 million across 5,436 hectares. Bamboo shoots, guavas, papayas, and pomelos were also damaged by the storm, with losses totaling NT$200 million, the COA said.

It estimated the losses in the category of fisheries at NT$83.57 million, in forestry NT$34.07 million, and in animal rearing NT$22.57 million.

Damage to agricultural facilities were NT$552.01 million, according to the COA.
