'Seediq Bale' premiere in Beijing receives ovation

2012/05/06 20:55:26

Beijing, May 6 (CNA) Cast members of the Taiwanese epic film "Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale," dressed in indigenous costume, received a round of enthusiastic applause from the audience after the film's premiere in Beijing Sunday.

Director Wei Te-sheng said it was not easy for the team to produce the movie nor to get it screened in China, but he expressed hope that through the film, Chinese audiences can understand the story of the Taiwanese indigenous people's revolt against oppression.

Asked about his expectations for the box office takings, Wei said he was unfamiliar with the Chinese market but "the more the better."

Pirated copies of the Taiwanese epic are already circulating in China, although the film will not hit Chinese movie theaters until May 10.

Wei urged Chinese moviegoers to see the film in theaters in order to best enjoy the visual and audio effects that he said cannot be well-presented at home. Audiences will see only "a simple story" if they choose to watch it at home, he said.

Responding to questions about his use of non-professional actors in the movie, Wei said that by using unfamiliar faces, it helps convince audiences that the actors on the screen are "just like the people they portray in the movie," an effect that could not have been achieved by casting famous movie stars.
