Taipei, Aug. 17 (CNA) The wife and daughter of former President Chen Shui-bian and other members of his family were sentenced by the Supreme Court Wednesday to jail terms ranging from three to nine months for perjury.
Chen's daughter, Chen Hsing-yu, who got a three-month term, was given a two-year delay in the execution of the sentence because her husband, Chao Chien-ming, was also given a three-month jail term in the same case and they have young children to take care of.
Chen's wife, Wu Shu-jen, was given nine months for masterminding her siblings and in-law Chao to give false testimony regarding the use of some of her husband's state affairs funds during his terms as president.
Wu instructed Chen Hsing-yu and son Chen Chih-chung to tell the court that they had obtained invoices through buying gifts for other people on behalf of their parents or treating guests on behalf of their father. Chao was also told to do the same. These invoices were then used to claim reimbursement from the state affairs funds.
The Supreme Court refused to grant a delay in executing the sentences for Wu, Chen and Chao.
The state affairs fund case, in which the former president and various members of his family have been charged with embezzlement, is still being tried.
