More than 300 children celebrate graduation with bike tour

Kaohsiung, June 11 (CNA) Over 300 sixth graders from southernTaiwan took up the challenge Saturday of riding 120 kilometers on acycling tour to mark their graduation from elementary school and thestart of a new stage in their lives.

Braving high temperatures and the blazing sun, the students from29 elementary schools departed from downtown Kaohsiung City andPingtung City at 8:30 a.m., and are scheduled to arrive at 5 p.m. atthe finishing point in Kenting, a beach resort in Pingtung County,where they will receive their graduation certificates.

The event, which is in its fifth year, was co-sponsored by theTaiwan Bike Leisure Industry Development Association and elementaryschools in Kaohsiung and Pingtung.

Police imposed traffic restrictions on some segments of thestudents' route and water was provided along the way to assist andprotect the students, some of whom have gone through physicaltraining in advance.

All of the participants, including school principles andteachers, vowed to complete the task and add an unforgettable page totheir life.

Er Yi-wei from Le-Chyun Elementary School in Kaohsiung expressedconfidence in overcoming the challenge.

"To succeed in this task, I took a 100-kg warm-up training last week," he said.

Wu Chia-yin, from Kuangchun Elementary School in Pingtung County,said because she practices the flute, she signed up to increase herlung capacity.

Wu's father, who had participated in the bike tour last year,said he hoped that his children could have an impressive graduationceremony as they have completed an important stage in their lives.
