Volunteer EMT aids ‘shovel superheroes’ in Hualien cleanup

On the first day of the Mid-Autumn Festival long weekend, more than 20,000 Taiwanese people chose not to vacation or return to their hometowns but instead traveled to Hualien County to help clean up Guangfu Township, which was devastated by flooding last week after a barrier lake overflowed. Among them was Mr. Chuang, a volunteer emergency medical technician (EMT), who spent all of Saturday in the township providing medical assistance to the “shovel superheroes” injured during the cleanup. CNA followed him for part of the day and spoke with him about his work and why he joined the effort.
