Tainan to give top model 12 products as wedding gifts
Taipei, Nov. 15 (CNA) The Tainan City government will give actress Lin Chi-ling (林志玲), Taiwan's top model, 12 items that cover "the seven everyday necessities" as gifts in celebration of her marriage to Japanese actor Akira, at a wedding banquet to be held in the southern Taiwan city Sunday.
Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-cher (黃偉哲) introduced the wedding gifts, which he dubbed "a full oxcart of dowry," to the public at City Hall Friday.
Tainan is the hometown of Lin's parents and the city is treating the wedding as if it is "giving Lin away."
The presents cover all the seven necessities that are listed in the ancient Chinese phrase: "Firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar and tea are the seven necessities to begin a day," Huang said.
The firewood consists of bamboo charcoal produced in Tainan's Longci District, while the rice is championship quality from Houbi and Liujia districts.
The gifts also include sesame oil from Shanhua and Xigang districts, salt from Qiqu, Dongcheng soy sauce and Chengkung soy sauce from Xinhua District, plum vinegar from Nanxi and Yifeng white gourd tea bricks from West Central District.
In addition, the gifts include a set of silk bedsheets and pillowcases, which represent a wish for the newlyweds to sleep well at night, dried longans and longan honey produced in Dongshan District that signify a wish for the birth of a son soon, Puli-produced lappa, and soft rush products from Xigang District, which will be gifted to Akira's parents.
Huang said that aside from the goods, which are popular in local markets, the city government invited Taiwanese artist Chen Chi-tsun (陳啟村) to craft a wooden baking mold for the production of traditional wedding cakes for the high-profile Lin-Akira marriage.
"It (the mold) was made especially for Lin Chi-ling and Akira, and can be used as a home decoration," said the mayor.
He described the job of selecting the 12 items as far more challenging than the selection of candidates for legislator-at-large seats by his party, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party.
All the gifts are produced in Tainan, he stressed, implying that giving them out is part of the city's tourism promotion strategy.
After years of reports of a romantic relationship with a Taiwanese actor, the 44-year-old Lin announced her marriage to Akira, 37, in June, surprising entertainment circles in Japan and Taiwan.
Akira's management company announced that the couple registered their marriage in Tokyo after doing the same in Taiwan June 6.
Akira, whose real name is Ryohei Kurosawa, joined Japanese boy band EXILE in 2006. He has acted in a number of TV dramas in Japan, as well as the 2010 Hong Kong superhero martial arts film "Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen" and the 2012 remake of the "Great Teacher Onizuka" series, which has been broadcast on Fuji TV since July 2012.
In 2017, he appeared in "Silence," a historical period drama directed by renowned director Martin Scorsese.
It was not until recently that it was confirmed the couple will hold their wedding banquet Nov. 17 at the Tainan Art Museum Building 1.
The museum was built in 1931 and originally housed the city's Police Administration during the Japanese colonial period. It was designated as a historic monument in 1998.
