Taiwan's Hsieh into Rogers Cup doubles quarterfinals

Taipei, Aug. 8 (CNA) Taiwanese tennis ace Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) and her Belgian tennis partner Kirsten Flipkens advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's doubles at the 2019 Rogers Cup in Canada Wednesday, although Taiwan's Chan sisters were not so fortunate.

Fourth-seeded Hsieh and Flipkens, paired for the first time, started the tournament strong, toppling the Japanese pair of Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya 6-3, 7-6 (0) in a match that lasted 90 minutes to move into the quarterfinals.

The duo broke serve in their Japanese opponents' first two service games, giving them an edge they would not relinquish.

They faced a much sterner test in the second set but exploited the Japanese players' lack of stamina to clinch the match with a 7-6 (0) tiebreak.

Meanwhile, fifth-seeded Taiwanese sister duo Latisha Chan (詹詠然) and Chan Hao-ching (詹皓晴) entered their match against Ukrainian Nadiia Kichenok and American veteran Abigail Spears in bad form and lost 1-6, 4-6.
