Taiwan to face unstable weather next week as low-pressure system develops

Taipei, Aug. 29 (CNA) Taiwan is forecast to experience unstable weather next week with a low-pressure system expected to bring precipitation, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said Saturday.

The CWA said moisture carried by southwesterly winds, combined with the low-pressure system, is expected to affect central and southern Taiwan next week, with intermittent rain possible throughout the day and heavier localized rainfall likely in southern areas.

Elsewhere, active convection is expected to trigger afternoon showers during the week, the CWA added.

The current low-pressure system could also lead to the development of other tropical weather systems, creating greater uncertainty over Taiwan's weather, according to the CWA.

The low-pressure system began impacting Taiwan on Saturday, and along with active convection effects the CWA warned of heavy rain across country in the afternoon.

A heavy rain advisory is in effect in 15 cities and counties across the country: New Taipei, Taoyuan and Hsinchu cities and Hsinchu and Miaoli counties in the north, Taichung City and Nantou County in central Taiwan, Chiayi, Tainan and Kaohsiung cities, Chiayi and Pingtung counties in the south and Yilan, Hualien and Taitung counties in the east.

A heavy rain warning means accumulated rainfall of more than 80 mm in 24 hours or more than 40 mm in one hour, according to the CWA.

The CWA said the heavy rain advisory will remain in effect into Saturday night.

On Sunday, brief localized showers are expected in southern and eastern Taiwan, while partly cloudy to sunny skies are forecast elsewhere and afternoon showers are also possible in mountainous areas south of Hsinchu County, the CWA said.

From Monday through Wednesday, brief showers are forecast in northern, eastern and southern Taiwan, while heavy rain is possible in mountainous areas of central and southeastern Taiwan in the afternoons, according to the CWA.

On Thursday and Friday, sporadic rainfall is likely in Keelung, along the north coast, and southern and eastern Taiwan, with mostly cloudy skies forecast elsewhere and afternoon thunderstorms possible, the CWA added.
