Magnitude 5.8 earthquake shakes southeastern Taiwan

Taipei, Aug. 25 (CNA) A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck off the coast of southeastern Taiwan at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The epicenter of the temblor was located at sea, about 48.0 kilometers east-southeast of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 13.1 km, according to the administration.

The earthquake's intensity was highest in Taitung County, where it measured 4 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale.

The quake also measured an intensity of 3 in Hualien County, Chiayi County, Yunlin County, Tainan and Chiayi City, the CWA said.

Alerts are issued to cities and counties expected to experience at least Level 4 seismic intensity for earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or greater, and at least Level 3 for earthquakes of magnitude 6.5 or greater.
