Taichung, Aug. 21 (CNA) The Taichung District Court on Friday sentenced a man to five years in prison for attempted murder after he pushed a Taiwan Railway station worker onto the tracks last October.
The incident occurred at Wuquan Station in Taichung on Oct. 6, 2025.
According to an indictment issued by the Taichung District Prosecutors Office, a man surnamed Chen (陳) got into a dispute with a station worker surnamed Chang (張) over a ticketing issue on the station's southbound platform at 3:34 p.m. that day.
Chen pushed Chang onto the southbound track as a northbound train was entering the station.
Due to the tracks being close to each other at the station, the incoming train braked to avoid hitting Chang, while Chen fled the scene.
Chang suffered multiple fractures and reported the incident to the Taichung Precinct of the Railway Police Bureau.
Chen was subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
During the trial, Chen admitted to pushing Chang but claimed that Chang lost his footing, causing him to fall as they argued at the platform edge.
Chen denied intending to kill Chang and said he did not know why he pushed the station worker, but acknowledged he had made a mistake.
On Friday, a panel of Taichung District Court judges found Chen guilty of attempted murder and sentenced him to five years in prison, as well as three years of court-ordered rehabilitation.
The ruling can be appealed.
