Taipei, June 25 (CNA) Taiwan's Ministry of Education has revised the school calendar to avoid a short interruption between the start of the new semester and the Lunar New Year holiday in 2026, ensuring a continuous winter break for students.
Originally, the second semester of the school year was scheduled to begin on Feb. 11, which would have required students to return to school for three days before they started the nine-day Lunar New Year break on Feb. 14.
In response to concerns from parents about the disruption to family routines, the ministry convened a meeting with local education authorities on Tuesday and decided to move the three school days to Jan. 21-23.
The classes on those three days will feature coursework from the second semester, though students will then have a month off before the new semester officially begins on Feb. 23.
Winter break will start three days later than scheduled on Jan. 24 and extend without interruption through the Lunar New Year holiday, which ends on Feb. 22.
The change complies with national regulations that limit winter breaks to 21 days and summer breaks to 60 days, the ministry said.
