ROAD SAFETY/Indonesian professional surfer killed in Taitung scooter crash
Taipei, Nov. 11 (CNA) Indonesian professional surfer Febri Ansyah died Friday morning from injuries suffered in a scooter crash, the Taitung County Government confirmed Saturday.
Febri's scooter crashed into a tree and a road sign near the 128 kilometer mark on Provincial Highway 11 early Friday, and he later died from severe wounds to the head, the Taitung County Transportation and Tourism Development Department said in a press release.
The 24-year-old was in Taitung to compete in the 2023 Taiwan Open of Surfing, which is taking place at the county's Jinzun Harbour from Nov. 6-12.
The Taitung County Government, the competition's organizer, suspended all events taking place Saturday morning and invited competitors to take part in a "paddle out" ceremony to commemorate Febri.
Events were resumed Saturday afternoon, the county government said.
