Taipei, May 16 (CNA) Jensen Huang (黃仁勳), founder of artificial intelligence chip giant Nvidia Corp., will serve as the final torchbearer at the opening ceremony of the 2025 World Masters Games in Taipei and New Taipei this Saturday.
Huang, 62, known for his passion for table tennis, joins four other Taiwanese figures "representing various fields and generations" at the opening ceremony at Taipei Dome, the event's organizing committee said Friday.
The other torchbearers will be baseball legend Peng Cheng-min (彭政閔), Olympic boxing gold medalist Lin Yu-ting (林郁婷), centenarian badminton player Lin Yu-mao (林友茂), and award-winning actress-director Sylvia Chang (張艾嘉).
Huang has emphasized the importance of finding a sport one is passionate about and continuing to pursue it.
"The best sport is the one you are willing to keep doing," Huang is cited as saying.
He is scheduled to arrive in Taiwan on Friday and will also attend the 2025 Computex show, themed "AI Next," from May 20-23 at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center.
Meanwhile, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) will also attend the opening ceremony of the World Masters Games, according to a source familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) confirmed on Thursday that President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) has said he could not personally attend the opening ceremony.
The 2025 version of the World Masters Games, a quadrennial event held since 1985, is the first to take place in Asia.
The organizers have announced that more than 25,000 athletes from 107 countries aged 30 and above, including over 2,000 participants aged 65 or older, will participate in the event. Notably, eight of the 15 participants aged 90 or older are from Taiwan.
