CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan receives three COVID-19 vaccine shipments
Taipei, July 15 (CNA) Taiwan on Thursday took delivery of 560,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine and 350,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine bought from the two manufacturers, as well as 970,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine donated by Japan.
The shipments, which amount to a total of 1.88 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, bring the total amount Taiwan has received to around 8.9 million doses.
That includes 3.65 million doses of the Moderna vaccine -- 1.15 million bought from the manufacturer and 2.5 million donated by the U.S. -- and 5.25 million doses of AstraZeneca -- nearly 3.34 million donated by Japan and the rest purchased from the manufacturer or through COVAX.
Thursday marks the third COVID-19 vaccine donation Japan has made to Taiwan, all of which have been of the AstraZeneca brand.
To date, 3.99 million people in Taiwan have received their first COVID-19 shot, which translates to 17 percent of the population, while 85,828 people, or 0.36 percent, have been fully vaccinated.
Taiwan's government has signed contracts to purchase about 20 million vaccine doses from abroad, including 5.05 million doses of Moderna, 10 million doses of AstraZeneca, and 4.76 million of unspecified brands through the COVAX program.
It has also signed contracts to buy 10 million doses of vaccines from two Taiwanese manufacturers, but their vaccines have not yet received emergency use authorization from Taiwan's Food and Drug Administration.
In addition, two Taiwanese tech firms have purchased a combined 10 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech (BNT) COVID-19 vaccine, which they will donate to the government for distribution.
