Season's lowest temperature of 8.6 degrees recorded in Taoyuan

Taipei, Dec. 8 (CNA) The mercury in Dasi, Taoyuan dipped to 8.6 degrees Celsius Sunday morning, the lowest so far in a flat area of Taiwan this winter, as a continental old mass arrived in the country, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

Weather monitoring stations in several other flat areas also recorded season lows, the bureau said, citing 8.9 degrees in Matsu island and 9.8 degrees in Taipei's Dann Forest Park and Wenshan District, New Taipei's Shuangxi District, and Kinmen island.

Elsewhere, the mercury dropped to lows of 10 degrees in New Taipei's Shenkeng District and 10.1 degrees in the city's Tamsui District, according to CWB data.

In areas north of Kaohsiung, lows of 10-13 degrees were recorded, while in Pingtung and Hualien temperatures dipped to 14-15 degrees, the data showed.

The CWB has forecast dry, cold weather during the day Sunday, with highs of 18-19 degrees in northern Taiwan, 21 degrees in Hualien and Taitung in the east, 23-24 degrees in central and southern Taiwan.

On Sunday night, under the influence of the cold front and a radiative cooling effect, the mercury will plunge to 11-15 degrees in most areas of Taiwan, and 10 degrees in some open and mountainous areas, the bureau said.

The bureau issued a low temperature warning of 10 degrees Celsius for 11 cities and counties for Sunday night, namely Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Miaoli, Hsinchu, Chiayi city and county, Yunlin, and Kinmen.

The cold front is expected to weaken on Monday, according to the CWB.
