Farm losses from recent rains estimated at almost NT$17 million

Taipei, Aug. 18 (CNA) Farm losses from the recent heavy rains in central and southern Taiwan have reached nearly NT$17 million (US$541,400), the Council of Agriculture (COA) reported Sunday.

As of 5 p.m., the damage to crops and farm facilities were estimated at NT$16.91 million, with Kaohsiung sustaining the heaviest losses of NT$11.01 million, the COA said in a statement.

Among other hard hit areas, Yunlin suffered losses of NT$3.56 million, Pingtung County NT$720,000, and Tainan NT$710,000, the COA said.

The heavy rains that began on Aug. 12 caused crop losses of NT$98.5 million, with papayas, peanuts, bananas and watermelons the most heavily affected, according to the COA.
