Taipei, Aug. 9 (CNA) A tropical disturbance will approach Taiwan from waters east of the island Aug. 14 and is predicted to affect the weather Aug. 15-17, meteorologist Wu Der-Romg (吳德榮) said Thursday.

The impact on Taiwan will depend on the strength it develops as it gets closer to the island, said Wu, an adjunct associate professor at the Departments of Atmospheric Sciences of National Taiwan University and National Central University.

If it upgrades into a tropical depression, it will bring rain and could develop into a typhoon, he said.

Wu said that the influence will be clear on Aug. 12 and that European, U.S. and Japanese forecasting systems show that it will likely impact local weather significantly.
