Taipei, May 18 (CNA) Saint Vincent and the Grenadines praised Taiwan's efforts in the global fight against the COVID-19 conoravirus pandemic and its health diplomacy in a statement made available to CNA Monday.

Andrea Bowman, ambassador of the Caribbean country to the Republic of China (Taiwan), said in the statement that her country is "grateful for the 39 years of friendship" the two countries have shared.

She praised Taiwan for offering effective health protocols, expertise and equipment to diplomatic allies, as well as major countries on the global stage without formal ties.

Despite being denied participation in the World Health Organization (WHO), "Taiwan has been a distinct global leader in combating the death toll, illness and devastating disruption caused by COVID-19," she said.

"Health diplomacy may now be regarded as one of Taiwan's means of reiterating the efficacy and strength of its sovereignty," she added.

Taiwan has donated 27.5 million face masks, 35,000 thermometers, 113 thermal imaging devices and 250 temperature monitoring devices to more than 80 countries, Taiwan's Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) said during a press briefing on Monday.

He said the country is ready for a new round of donations that will include 23.5 million surgical masks, 1.16 million N95 respirator masks, 170,000 pieces of protective clothing, 600,000 protective gowns, 80 ventilators and 34 PCR (polymerase chain reaction) machines for quick tests.

Taiwan's donations have won praise and been reported widely around the world, Wu said.
