Taiwanese shuttler advances to second round in Fuzhou Open
Taipei, Nov. 5 (CNA) Taiwan badminton ace Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) advanced to the second round of the Fuzhou Open in China Tuesday after her Spanish opponent pulled out of their match due to injury.
World No. 2 Tai toppled Rio de Janeiro Olympic gold medalist Carolina Marin 21-16, 13-1 in 24 minutes before the former world No. 1 retired from the match due to injury.
The victory marks her eighth win over the No.1-seeded Marin in their 14 career matchups.
Tai will face Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the second round match Wednesday.
The Fuzhou China Open, which kicked off earlier Tuesday, will run until Nov. 10, carrying a total purse of US$700,000.
