Migrant worker dies in New Taipei factory fire

New Taipei, Aug. 24 (CNA) A migrant worker was found dead after a fire engulfed a three-story corrugated metal factory in New Taipei's Xinzhuang District late Sunday, according to local authorities.

At 11:11 p.m. Sunday, firefighters were alerted to a blaze at a building on Lane 268, Xingshu Road, which was a copper pipe factory that occupied the first two floors and housed migrant workers on the third level, the authorities said.

When the fire broke out, there were six Thai male workers in the dormitory, and five managed to escape, while one was reported missing, according to the authorities.

It took close to two hours for the 125 firefighters and 60 fire engines on the scene to extinguish the blaze, the authorities said.

During a search of the burned building, firefighters found the body of the missing worker at around 3 a.m. on the third floor, according to the authorities.

As of press time, the identity of the worker had not been disclosed, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
