New elevated walkway opens at Minquan Bridge in Taipei

Taipei, July 20 (CNA) An elevated pedestrian walkway connected to Minquan Bridge in Taipei opened on Monday, with Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) describing it as an ideal spot for watching aircraft take off and land at nearby Songshan Airport.

Speaking at a ceremony to open the walkway, Chiang said it was part of a broader renovation project designed to bolster the bridge's resistance to earthquakes and floods while also improving the area's recreational facilities and forging a more pedestrian-friendly urban environment.

A major benefit of the walkway, Chiang said, was that it will provide easier access between riverside parks in Taipei's Songshan and Neihu districts.

The walkway's design resembles a ribbon winding along the Keelung River, while its circular viewing platforms offer panoramic views of the river and Songshan Airport to the west, he said.

Chiang also highlighted the Minsheng water resources center, which is currently under construction, saying it will eventually connect with the Minquan Bridge and provide a new route for cycling and walking.

According to the Taipei Public Works Department's New Construction Office, construction of the walkway began in August 2025 and was completed on May 28.

The office said the walkway features a lightweight steel structure and circular viewing platforms overlooking the Keelung River. It also incorporates nighttime lighting designed to complement the illumination along both sides of the river.
