Taipei, March 11 (CNA) Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported 8,618 new cases of COVID-19 and 48 deaths from the disease on Saturday.

Among the new infections, 8,444 were domestic, which represented a 24.4-percent drop from the same day a week earlier, according to the CECC.

Due to the improving COVID-19 situation, the number of newly reported cases could continue to drop and remain below 10,000 or even fewer than 9,000 in the coming week, CECC spokesperson Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞) said.

Since no new emerging strains of the virus have been detected, Lo said the likelihood that Taiwan experiences a rebound of the epidemic in the near future "should be very low."

To date, Taiwan has recorded 10,161,496 COVID-19 infections and 18,473 deaths from the disease since the pandemic began in early 2020.

The CECC announced on Feb. 23 that it would stop releasing more detailed daily information on new COVID-19 cases and deaths.
