CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 188 new COVID cases, most patients freed from isolation
Taipei, June 18 (CNA) Taiwan on Friday reported 188 new cases of COVID-19, all but one of which were domestically transmitted, as well as 21 deaths, marking the sixth straight day with fewer than 200 cases, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
At the same time, more than 50 percent of over 12,000 COVID-19 patients have been released from isolation, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said at a CECC press briefing.
Before that, Taiwan reported 200-plus daily cases from June 7-12, and totals averaging in the 400s and 500s from mid-May through early June, according to CECC data.
Of the 187 domestic cases reported Thursday, 83 are men and 104 are women, aged from below five to their 90s, with the onset of symptoms occurring from May 29 to June 18, Chen said.
New Taipei had the most local infections, with 76 cases, followed by Taipei with 71, Miaoli County with 26, Taoyuan with six, Keelung with four, Taichung with two, and one each in Hualien and Hsinchu Counties.
Of the 40 domestic cases reported outside Taipei and New Taipei, 38 had known sources of infection, while two had an unclear connection with other cases, according to Chen.
The 21 fatalities were 12 men and nine women, aged in their 50s to their 90s, who passed away between June 10 and June 16, Chen said.
Over the past few days, the average number of deaths per day has been around 20, Chen said.
To date, 518 people in Taiwan have died from COVID-19, including 506 since May 15, according to CECC data.
The new cases Friday brought the total number in Taiwan to 13,771, of which 12,556 are domestic infections reported since May 15, when the country first reported over 100 cases in a single day, according to the data.
From May 11 to June 16, 56.3 percent of 12,210 people with confirmed COVID-19 infection have been released from isolation, according to Chen.
