Taipei, July 28 (CNA) A centenarian Pingtung County resident recently filed for divorce from his octogenarian Chinese wife, making him the oldest person ever to file for divorce in the county's history, according to a local newspaper report.

The wheelchair-bound man, surnamed Chou (周), applied last month for a divorce from his wife, identified by her family name Chen (陳), at Pingtung District Court, citing abandonment as the reason, a Sunday report in the Chinese-language Liberty Times said. On seeing Chou's national identification card, court officials were surprised to learn he was born in 1919.

Chen is the oldest person ever to file for divorce in the county and possibly the nation, they said.

Court officials said Chen wants a divorce from 81-year-old Chen after being married more than 20 years.

According to Chou's account, Chen took hundreds of thousands of Taiwan dollars from his bank account, and left for China last year saying she needed a break.

He decided to file for divorce after learning that Chen did not go to China, but is in fact living in northern Taiwan.

Chen filed a counter suit with the court, requesting an equal division of the couple's assets.

According to friends, despite his advanced age, Chou remains in good health thanks to his years in the military, while his wife suffers from several health problems.
