Taipei, Aug. 17 (CNA) Six people were arrested in Taoyuan earlier this week in connection with an online gambling operation, the city's police department said Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off, police arrested a man suspected of being the ringleader in the online gambling business, and five others, at a location in Taoyuan, the department's Criminal Investigation Corps said in a statement.

Police also seized eight computers, two printers, seven mobile phones, and other electronic devices, the department said.

The gambling website allowed people to place bets in a range of sports competitions being held overseas, including baseball, basketball and football, as well as in Hong Kong's popular Mark Six lottery, police said.

The illegal gambling ring had raked in profits of millions of Taiwan dollars this year based on total bets of NT$2.2 billion (US$70.88 million), according to Taoyuan police.

The suspected ringleader has admitted that he was running the gambling site, police said, adding that the case has now been handed over to the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office for further investigation.
