Iconic tree in Taitung 60 percent recovered one year after damage

An iconic bishopwood tree that stands in a picturesque rice field in the eastern county of Taitung has recovered 60 percent since it was uprooted by Typhoon Matmo more than one year ago. The tree, scientifically known as a bischofia javanica, has sprouted leaves again, and birds are nesting in its branches. The bandages on its trunk have also been removed.
