Taipei, July 18 (CNA) A sea warning is likely to be issued as early as next Tuesday for Tropical Storm Matmo, which has formed southwest of Guam, becoming the 10th named storm of 2014, and a land warning for it cannot be ruled out, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Friday.

The CWB adjusted its projections for the storm's path Friday afternoon as Matmo was moving in a more southwardly direction and approaching Taiwan more than previously forecasted. If itsheads more southward, it could be the first typhoon to make landfall in Taiwan this year.

Matmo was at sea 1,970 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's southern tip at Ouluanpi in the southernmost county of Pingtung and could get stronger, the CWB said, adding that Monday will be a key day to determine its path. The CWB said the storm would not likely affect Taiwan before Sunday.

As Matmo nears the northeastern part of Taiwan, the area will likely experience rain beginning in the first half of Tuesday.

The storm is expected to bring rain to all parts of the island on Wednesday and Thursday. (Angela Tsai and Evelyn Kao)
