President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) underlined Taiwan's resolve to defend its sovereignty in his National Day speech on Thursday, saying the People's Republic of China "has no right to represent Taiwan" and his mission as president is to "uphold the commitment to resist annexation or encroachment upon our sovereignty."
