Taipei, June 28 (CNA) The election strategy committee of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Tuesday selected legislator Huang Shiou-fang (黃秀芳) to run for Changhua County magistrate in the November local government elections.

The committee, which convened on Tuesday evening, also tapped Deputy Secretary-General to the President Lee Chun-yi (李俊俋) as the party's candidate to run for Chiayi City mayor.

Speaking about the selection of Huang and Lee, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), who serves concurrently as DPP chairperson, was quoted in a party press statement as saying that the committee is dedicated to nominating the most suitable candidates who will win the local government elections scheduled for Nov. 26.

Huang will bring change to Changhua County, Tsai said, adding that she believes Lee would help bring about the development Chiayi has long needed.

Huang was first elected to the Legislature in 2016, after having served as a Changhua county councilor for nearly a decade.

The 50-year-old lawmaker will challenge incumbent Wang Hui-mei (王惠美), who is seeking a second term on behalf of the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT), in the county magistrate race.

Meanwhile, Lee Chun-yi, who served as a legislator and deputy Chiayi City mayor before working at the Presidential Office, later said on Facebook that he is ready to take on the challenge.

Lee will face incumbent KMT Mayor Huang Ming-hui (黃敏惠), who has headed up the county-level city since 2018 and previously held the same position from 2005-2014.

Lee, without elaborating, said Chiayi City is in "crisis" because of a lack of development, while pledging, if elected, to address the city's problems using his years of experience working in both central and local governments.
