Berlin, Oct. 10 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) will be one of the guests next week to open the 24th Forum 2000 Conference, which will be held online this year instead of in Prague because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the conference program, Tsai, Czech Senate President Miloš Vystrčil and British historian Timothy Garton Ash will open the three-day online conference Monday, according to the Forum 2000 website.

The conference serves as a platform for global leaders and thinkers to share their opinions on critical issues such as supporting the values of democracy and respect for human rights.

In addition to Tsai, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) will also deliver a speech at the conference Wednesday. Both Tsai and Wu will deliver their speeches in the form of pre-recorded videos.

Founded in 1996, the Forum 2000 is a joint initiative of the late Czech President Václav Havel, Japanese philanthropist Yohei Sasakawa and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel.

Since 1997, the Forum 2000 Foundation has been organizing annual Forum 2000 conferences in Prague, Czech Republic, which has attracted a number of prominent thinkers, Nobel laureates, former and acting politicians and business leaders.

The mission of the foundation is to pursue Havel's legacy by supporting democracy and human rights, assisting the development of civil society and encouraging religious, cultural and ethnic tolerance. (Lin Yu-li and William Yen)
