Taiwan's president wishes U.K. PM swift coronavirus recovery
Taipei, April 7 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Tuesday wished British Prime Minister Boris Johnson a speedy recovery in his fight against his COVID-19 coronavirus infection.
"On behalf of the government and the people of Taiwan, I want to offer my best wishes to Boris Johnson for a swift recovery. This is the moment for us to work together to fight the COVID-19 pandemic," Tsai said on Twitter.
The president was one of many heads of state around the world to offer their best wishes to Johnson, who was moved to intensive care late Monday as his symptoms worsened.
The 55-year-old Johnson was moved on the advice of his medical team after he was admitted to hospital in London on Sunday, according to a statement from No.10 Downing Street.
"The PM is receiving excellent care and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication," the statement said.
Johnson was admitted to St Thomas' Hospital, according to the statement.
British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has been asked to deputise for the prime minister when necessary, the statement continued.
Johnson tested positive for the acute respiratory disease March 27, according to British media.
There are a total of 51,608 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the U.K., according to official U.K. government data valid as of Monday. Of those hospitalized there, a total of 5,373 had died as of Sunday.
Globally, COVID-19 has infected 1,298,066 people in 182 countries and regions, including 356,942 in the U.S., 135,032 in Spain, 132,547 in Italy, 95,391 in Germany and 81,740 in China, with a total of 73,444 fatalities, according to statistics released on Tuesday by Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center.
