2020 ELECTIONS / Lawyers endorse president's re-election bid

Taipei, Dec. 4 (CNA) More than 100 lawyers showed their support for the re-election bid of incumbent President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) in Taipei Wednesday as Tsai's running mate, former Premier Lai Ching-te (賴清德), called on more lawyers to follow suit.

Speaking at a press conference to announce the formation of a Tsai-Lai support group, Lai thanked the members, comprising 100-plus lawyers, for their support.

He said many pro-democracy lawyers in Taiwan have played important roles in the nation's democratization process and helped to defend thousands of Taiwanese human rights activists during the 1949-1987 White Terror era of the previous Kuomintang (KMT) regime.

Lawyers also played a crucial part in the trials that followed the Kaohsiung Incident, a crackdown on pro-democracy demonstration that took place in the southern Taiwan city Dec. 10, 1979.

The then-KMT administration had many of the protesters arrested, and around a dozen of lawyers volunteered to defend them, Lai noted.

Many of the protesters and lawyers later went on to become leading figures in the now-ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Lai said that the Jan. 11 presidential and legislative elections will be another pivotal moment requiring support for the DPP's Tsai-Lai ticket to defend Taiwan's democracy and sovereignty.

Tsai's main challenge is expected to come from the KMT's Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), currently mayor of Kaohsiung, and his running mate, former Premier Chang San-cheng (張善政).
