Taiwan to review minimum wage Sept. 24, expected to top NT$30,000

Taipei, Sept. 11 (CNA) The Ministry of Labor (MOL) is set to review next year's minimum wage on Sept. 24, with the monthly rate expected to exceed NT$30,000 (US$948) after the government expressed support for an increase.

The MOL issued a notice Friday informing members of the Minimum Wage Review Committee that it would meet at 10 a.m. on Sept. 24, CNA has learned.

The panel -- comprising representatives from government, labor, management and academia -- meets annually in the third quarter to review minimum wage levels for the coming year.

Taiwan's minimum wage currently stands at NT$29,500 per month and NT$196 per hour.

The committee is expected to approve an increase that would push the minimum wage beyond NT$30,000, in line with goals repeatedly stated by President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰).

Cho reiterated his support for raising the minimum wage above NT$30,000 on an online program Wednesday, citing Taiwan's record economic growth and strong showings in global rankings.
