Taipei, Oct. 22 (CNA) Taiwan Mobile Co. has become Taiwan's first telecom operator to receive 5G SA (standalone access) system certification from the National Communications Commission, which will enable it to provide advanced SA services.

Tom Koh (郭宇泰), Taiwan Mobile's senior vice president and chief technology officer, said SA is a step up from non-standalone access (NSA) when it comes to 5G development, as the former is able to provide faster connectivity and more capable telecommunications to mobile users.

According to Taiwan Mobile, SA will be able to unleash the full potential of 5G, which was initially developed based on NSA architecture.

"5G SA technology does not rely on the existing 4G framework and surpasses the current NSA network, a service providing lower latencies, network slicing and other innovative network services to allow corporations, start-ups and individual users to enjoy the experience of advanced 5G features," the company said.

Taiwan Mobile said it has also been involved in smart medical care for many years, and expects the deployment of 5G SA technology in that field to soon become a reality.

According to the Global Mobile Suppliers Association, only 12 telecom operators in nine countries offered SA technology in 5G as of June 2021.
