Taipei, Dec. 23 (CNA) For the first time since May, a day has passed with no new cases of dengue fever recorded in the southern city of Tainan, health officials said Wednesday.

Not a single new dengue infection was reported in Tainan from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 p.m. Wednesday, which signals that the outbreak there is slowing down, according to the Tainan City Department of Health.

Since no new cases were reported, the data was released almost immediately, at around 7 p.m. Wednesday.

If there had been new infections, health authorities would have had to spend time confirming the cases and determining whether they were indigenous or imported, and therefore would not have released the figures until the next morning, officials explained.

The number of indigenous dengue fever cases in Tainan since May had reached 22,744 as of Tuesday. The peak of the outbreak was on Sept. 24, when 709 new cases of the mosquito-borne were reported in the city.

There have been 11 days recently in which Tainan has reported fewer than five new dengue fever cases each day, official statistics showed.

Since the start of the dengue outbreak in Taiwan at the beginning of May, there have been 42,572 cases nationwide and 209 dengue deaths.
