Taipei, April 8 (CNA) Taiwan secured its place in the Group II division of the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone after beating Iran 4-0 in the relegation playoffs in Taipei on Sunday.

Taiwan went into today's games with a 2-0 lead over Iran, after Jason Jung (莊吉生) and Yang Tsung-hua (楊宗樺) beat their opponents in two singles matches on Saturday.

In the doubles match that followed on Sunday, Taiwan's Hsieh Cheng-peng (謝政鵬) and Peng Hsien-yin (彭賢尹) overpowered Iran's Mohammad Kargaranoroochi and Ashkan Shokoofi in two straight sets -- 6-0, 6-4 -- that lasted just 56 minutes.

Speaking after the game, Hsieh praised his doubles partner Peng for putting up a good fight.

"Today, we tried hitting deep to the baseline, and the strategy worked well for us," Hsieh said, expressing his excitement about not been relegated and his desire to help Taiwan move into Group I in the future.

Following the doubles win, rising tennis star Hsu Yu-hsiou (許育修) sealed victory for Taiwan in the relegation playoffs that day after defeating Shahin Khaledan 4-6, 6-1, (10-8) in a singles match that lasted roughly 84 minutes.

After the game, Hsu said he was honored to have represented Taiwan in the Davis Cup, which is the premier international team event in men's tennis.

"I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous," Hsu said, adding that this was his first ever win in a Davis Cup game.

Asked about his decision to field a rookie in this crucial game, Taiwan team captain and coach Chiang Jinn-yen (江勁彥) said the move was to give Hsu the opportunity to gain experience in a major international tournament.

"A player with such potential needs to get his feet wet," Chiang said, complimenting Hsu for picking up his pace and overcoming his opponent despite losing the first set.
