UNIVERSIADE/Taiwan's Fu Chao-hsuan bags silver in long jump at World University Games

Taipei, July 25 (CNA) Taiwanese high jumper Fu Chao-hsuan (傅兆玄) saw his hopes for a gold medal dashed at the World University Games in Germany on Thursday, after an Israeli athlete overtook him in the final jump, leaving him with a silver.
In the men's high jump final, Fu started out at 2.08 meters and was able to clear each subsequent height -- 2.13 m, 2.17 m, 2.23 m and 2.25 m -- without any problem.
He attempted a height of 2.27 meters on his sixth jump but was unsuccessful in all three tries.
Israel's Jonathan Kapitolnik also failed his first two attempts at 2.27 m, but cleared the height on his final try, narrowly edging out the Taiwanese, who once again missed out on a gold medal.
The second place finish marked Fu's second silver medal win after he achieved a 2.20 m jump at the World University Games in China's Chengdu in 2021.
In Germany, he attempted to break his personal record of 2.27 m, a height which he achieved during an athletics event in Taiwan in February.
Speaking to reporters after the competition, Fu said he was hoping to take a gold medal home, and felt he almost had it, only to see it taken away at the last moment.
"But despite the silver win, I'm still happy about it," he said.
The Taiwanese high jumper said he will be focusing on next year's Asia Games in Nagoya, Japan, and expressed hope that he can stand on the medal podium again.
Meanwhile, Taiwanese long jumper Lin Yu-tang (林昱堂) finished sixth in the men's event in Germany on Thursday after achieving his best of 7.72 m in two attempts.
