Taiwan's Tai loses in BWF World Championships quarterfinals
Taipei, Aug. 23 (CNA) Taiwanese badminton star Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) failed to reach the semifinals of the women's singles at the 2019 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships in Switzerland Friday, losing to Pusarla V. Sindhu of India.
The World No. 2 was defeated 21-12, 21-23, 19-21.
Tai was able to seize the opening game with an easy win, but her Indian rival quickly fought back to tie the second.
Tai ultimately failed to fend off Sindhu in a match that lasted 71 minutes.
Despite her loss, she has been dominant so far this year, winning five championship titles -- the Indonesia Masters, the All England, the Badminton Asia Championships, the Malaysia Open and the Indonesia Open.
The BWF World Championships, the world's most prestigious badminton tournament, offers the highest number of ranking points, along with the Summer Olympic Games, to participating players.
The tournament will run until Aug. 25, with the winners gaining gold medals and the title of "World Champions," but they will not receive any prize money.
