Taitung's outlying islands suspend school, work due to storm

Taipei, July 17 (CNA) Taitung County announced Wednesday afternoon that schools and offices will be closed on Green Island and Orchid Island starting at 6 p.m. due to the approach of Tropical Storm Danas.

As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, the system was located 400 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip near Eluanbi, moving westward at a speed of 17 kilometers per hour, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

It was packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph and gusts of 90 kph, according to the bureau.

Green Island is just over 30 km off the coast of Taitung City while Orchid Island is nearly 70 km off the coast of Eluanbi. They both lie close to the expected path of the tropical storm, which is forecast move in a northward direction over waters east of Taiwan.

The CWB also issued a torrential rain and gust warning for eastern Yilan, Hualien, Taitung counties and the Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung County at 1 p.m.

The bureau estimated that the accumulated rainfall until midnight Friday for the above-mentioned areas and mountainous areas in Kaohsiung and Tainan could reach 500 mm, and it reminded residents in those areas to be prepared for torrential rainfall and flooding.
