Taipei, March 11 (CNA) A National Airborne Service helicopter crashed into waters off Shimen District of New Taipei on Friday, leaving one person dead and another in critical condition, the New Taipei Fire Department said.
The deceased was identified as Tsai Chung-ta (蔡宗達), a 35-year-old special services officer with the Coast Guard, who may have been hit by the helicopter's rotor, the department said.
Tsai was sent to the Jinshan branch of National Taiwan University Hospital right after the incident but could not be saved.
The man in critical condition is the helicopter's pilot, who is undergoing emergency care at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, the department said.
The other three people on board the chopper were all rescued within 90 minutes after the crash, which occurred at 1:18 p.m. None of them were said to have serious injuries.
The helicopter was dispatched to take an engineer and two Coast Guard specialists to a Taiwan-registered 13,500-ton freighter that ran aground Thursday about 300 meters off the coast to see how much oil had been leaked by the ship.
All 21 of the freighter's crew members were airlifted to safety after they abandoned ship on the captain's orders.
